On March 18, 2015 I attended an event put on by the AIMP (Association of Independent Music Publishers) at the ASCAP building in Nashville, TN.

The speakers at today’s event, Kerry O’Neil and Carla Wallace; are the owners of Big Yellow Dog Music.

In case your not familiar with Big Yellow Dog Music, let me shout out a  few of their accolades.

* Over 20 Number One hits
* 4 Grammy’s
* Multiple Placements in Film and TV

Being an Independent Publisher myself in a big city like Nashville, I couldn’t wait to attend this event. I’m always up for learning from another successful Music Publisher who is further ahead in the game than I am.

The topic of the day was how Big Yellow Dog Music found Meghan Trainor and everything in between. Watch a clip below of Carla Wallace discussing how they met Meghan Trainor and signed her.

It was also discussed how Meghan Trainor actually met LA Reid and how the song was pitched specifically.

Lastly, toward the end of this event they had a question and answer session. Since we were in a room full of independent music publishers, I asked Kerry O’neil a question I felt would benefit any new music publisher trying to sign new writers or songs.

Here’s what he had to say,

AIMP
put on a great event. Once it was over I had an opportunity meet Kerry O’Neil and exchange contact information. I’ve only been in Nashville a couple years, but I love how friendly the people are in the music business here.

As a member of AIMP I will be attending many more events in the future and will continue to connect with songwriters and other industry professionals.

If you’ve never heard “All About That Bass” from Meghan Trainor… Here it is
